West Rigolets Lighthouse
West Rigolets Lighthouse
Built in 1855 and abandoned in
1945, this square lighthouse is an easy miss when you are driving on Hwy 90 in
New Orleans East, heading toward Chalmette. Originally costing a mere
$5,000, this lighthouse has had to be rebuilt numerous times as a result of
storm damage. Without question its future is uncertain at best. Soon
the damage from years of neglect, along with the Lake Ponchartrain storms will
render this lighthouse a piece of rubble. Please take the time to see this
one before it is too late.
With no access from land, the lighthouse must be viewed from
a narrow knoll off the east end of the Chef Pass bridge. Look north west
to see this wonderful piece of history.
